Vacancy film

Opening of the film. Sub Genre is horror and thriller. Characters involved are a husband, wife and another male.

Titles- Dark red colours which give off a feeling of danger and they run like blood which might mean that there is going to be blood in the film. Music with the film is high paced and accelerating which gives of a eerie type feeling. It has intense and jumpy music which gets worse as the music increases again raising the tension. The titles then turn into a maze which could signify escape or entrapment.

The film has a typical scene when they try to dodge an animal in the road which results in them losing control of the car. This is typical to thriller and horror films which usually result in the characters being stranded or stuck somewhere they wouldn't usually be. They are also surrounded by darkness which could be hiding something or someone that is watching them. It gives an eerie feel as you don't know exactly what could be in the dark, a few metres away from the characters.

The characters try to put on the radio although all they get is static, again this is typical to horror type films. The static also gives off the feeling of isolation as it is just the husband and the wife in a car with lots of space around them and their seems to be no one in the distance or even close by. This shows that they must have been travelling for quite a while as they are driving through the night.

There is a scene where the couple pull into an isolated gas station which seems to be open yet it gives questions to the audience as the station is only small and is on an isolated road so they couldn't possibly stay open all night as they wouldn't be able to afford it. This males you wonder why it is open. A man suddenly appears at the car window making the couple jump which again makes you wonder why the man is wide awake at such a late time.

In the car there is low lighting which again gives off an eerie feeling but it could also be trying o hide he characters faces, this could signify that they are hiding something from the audience. The couple argue in a lot yet it is far more than the average couple supposedly argues. The male character (husband) gives humour which tries to lighten the mood although this is at the females expense which her expression clearly shows as she gives him daggers. The couple look as though they are in different cars due to them being so far apart from each other which might mean that they are separated but they are could have been forced to some events together.

The male character constantly rubs his eyes at various points and this tells the audience that he is tired. Yet the tired feel could also refer to the fact that he is tired of the relationship that he has with the female as he rubs his eyes the most when they are arguing in the car.

The music changes as they pull into the gas station which becomes more apparent as they get closer to the location. The background also comes into view which again shows that they have come from a long distance away. The road seems to go on for miles although most of it is encased in darkness which could mean that they are alone or trapped.

The female (wife) keeps asking her husband who is driving the car various questions. These include: where are we? which the male completely ignores possibly showing that he doesn't know where they are either. The husband is shown to be agitated while the wife seems to be more calm and quiet. The male stills wears a wedding ring although the female doesn't seem to be wearing one, this could prove the fact that they are separated.

The CD player seems to be old fashioned for the car showing that its not supposed to be there possibly like its owners not supposed to be at the station. The characters introduce a name which is proven later on to be their child who died although it doesn't tell you why at the start of the film, this could of been the event which caused the couple to end their relationship.

The motel is possibly a false oasis of light which means that it seems to be a good omen as they can get their car checked but is the motel really safe? The male at the station tells them that a certain road leads to a dead end which could mean the end of life or the end of a destination etc. Their is sharp music playing as the male at the motel appears which raises tension and makes you jump. He is wide awake in the middle of the night which means that he could be expecting them or waiting for them.

  1. Excellent Jonny. You have included a lot of detail here, especially regarding lighting and symbols. Try to refer to camera angles/shots as well, e.g. the wide shot of them in the car showing the distance. M
